Valve Amplifier Study 028: MOD 6V6GT Beam Tetrode & 6J5 Driver Single Ended Amplifier
This video is our part one, an introduction to our very basic MOD 6V6GT single ended valve amplifier (circa 1952 built?) using a 6J5 driver tube and a 6X5 full wave rectifier. In the future we will follow up for our basic electronics tutorial series with plenty of test and measurements and experimentation of the negative feedback and also using a different driver circuit.
I call it the MOD 6V6 as I believe it was made from ex MOD (ministry of defence) surplus parts.

I know this console and relocated one in the 1980's. I will point out that in typical RCA fashion, all of the 1R and 1C numbers relate back to a parts list that will be more specific about the values. Also keep in mind that these consoles were mostly used in AM radio broadcast (sometimes FM) and not recording, so while they wanted it rugged and well built, the fi didn't need to be too high, just reasonable. They were really just for announcers and news broadcast. This is a preamp, that would work for years without any need for attention. Many of these ran non stop for 40 years, and mostly needed output tubes changed from time to time. Preamp tube ran a lot longer.

@@vintageaudioworkshop Also 50+ years here! I never advise users with less experience to alter the grid voltage for 2 reasons. 1) It is very difficult to get an accurate zero with the grid voltage control 2) You and I can look at valve characteristic curves and see what to expect at various Vg1 settings. Others get confused when they alter Vg1 and find the gm has changed too. They don't appreciate that the valve is not linear. The Avo valve data only shows what to expect at fixed levels of anode, screen and g1. That works for good/bad testing or measuring gm. Sticking to those levels helps new users to avoid confusion, thinking a tester is faulty, or getting misleading results.

Actually there is an argument for pure pentode/pure tetrode amplifiers. There's more power available and less pick-up to and from the extra transformer wiring. All amps modern and new should be as simple as Reasonably possible! They never really needed to twist wires to stop heater hum or have hum bucklers - split plastic casing shorting out heater lines and burnt out transformers respectively can result. And modern switch mode power supplies to power heaters can just result in rf noise (not always) apparent, but just distorts audio! All you need is on side of parallel heaters to deck on each valve holder and common wire connecting All heaters. Modern op amps make good preamp anyway which don't need heater supplies!. But it's daft putting microprocessors into valve amps, these are in your cd player which plugs into the valve amp. There's even a daft £200, 000 20Watt stereo amp out therewith uses old 300b tubes (not designed as audio tubes) and microprocessor technology for USB input!

I must say, that circuit is a clever way of saving money and getting a richer, fatter sound out of the small eliptical speaker. We live in an age where such things are not really a consideration and its nice to see how using things like an inverting valve stage against itself to reduce hum was actually a thing back then!

I bought one if these together with the au stereo amp a couple of days ago from a charity shop for 80 sobs. It's missing the cable to connect the amp to the record player, the speed appears to be stuck on 33 and doesnt play on auto. The stylus could do with replacing (it wont play new vinyl discs at all). Other than that, I love the look, the smell and the sound- albeit a little rough. I'm hoping a new stylus will make all the difference, together with the correct lead for the au51 if only I was certain what I need to order. Any advice would be very much appreciated.
